Besides being popular as a hill station, Kasauli has the world’s oldest brewery, the little history of which you need to know!
Kasauli is a place that is believed to have been discovered by the Britishers, so the probability for it to have the oldest brewery becomes more factual.
Edward Dyer built the oldest brewery in Asia, famous for ‘scotch whisky’ in the late 1820s. In the 19th century, while the brewery was under construction, Edward bought equipment himself from his native England and Scotland. They probably thought their rule would last forever, but that certainly did not happen to be true. However, this brewery became the oldest. The pieces of equipment came all the way sailing through the ship that was further taken up to the hills through Shimla on the Ox drawn carts. Some copper pot still from the 1900s is still found there.
What attracted Edward towards Kasauli was the climatic condition similar to that of Scotland. Besides that, the availability of fine spring water was another crucial factor for him to choose the place. He wanted to make the malt whiskey that was as fine as the scot whiskey. Further, the British and Civilians market was allocated around the area, which can also be a valid reason.
As the year passed, the population in the hilltop increased, which led to more and more usage of the Spring Water. Because of this, the brewery’s location shifted to Solan, where it still functions.
However, this distillery in Kasauli still functions today, which is considered the oldest in Asia.
The distillery’s best whisky called ‘Solan No. 1’ was named after the Solan town. But, in recent years, the value of the whisky has declined after battling against popular flavoured rums.
Whether the brewery is the world’s oldest or not is still not as clear, but it is definitely an ancient one and the first one in Asia.
This was a brief history of Kasauli’s famous brewery. Besides this as a historical depiction, there are many other places in Kasauli to visit, including Monkey point, Lower and Upper Mall, Christ Church, Nahri Temple, Lover’s Lane, and many more.
Besides the view of the mountains, there are so many other places to visit in Kasauli with historical significance.
